How It Plays
Hevnoraak is the iron dragon priest mask, and it guards the body rather than the mind. The wearer cannot catch a disease and shrugs off poison. Those threats are small one by one, yet they wear a character down over a long journey. The mask removes all of them in one slot.
Disease is everywhere in Skyrim. Skeevers, wolves, bears and draugr all carry illnesses. Each disease drains a stat, such as Stamina regeneration or a skill. A cure needs a potion, a shrine or a priest. Hevnoraak makes all of those trips unnecessary while it is worn.
The poison half matters in fights. Frostbite Spiders, Chaurus and Falmer all poison on hit. Some bandits and assassins also coat their blades. With Hevnoraak, those attacks lose their poison damage.
The mask has one special use. Sanguinare Vampiris is the disease that turns a character into a vampire. A character who wants to stay mortal can wear Hevnoraak while fighting vampires, and the bite never takes hold. The disease immunity of the mask covers this disease like any other.
Hevnoraak is heavy armor with the standard heavy rating of the priest masks. A warrior can wear it every day without losing protection. It counts toward the Well Fitted and Matching Set perks of the Heavy Armor Skill tree.
Perks and Builds
The mask suits a heavy armor warrior who wants a quiet extra benefit from the head slot. Juggernaut raises its rating, and Conditioning removes its weight. A full heavy set with Hevnoraak keeps all the armor bonuses.
A Wood Elf already resists disease and poison by half. A Redguard resists poison, and an Argonian resists disease. Hevnoraak covers every race fully, so it matters most for races with no such resistance. A Nord, a Breton or an Imperial gains the most from it.
Traps form one exception. Some traps carry a disease that ignores resistance, and the mask does not stop those. Every other disease and poison in the world is blocked.
Compared with Other Masks
Otar is the other defensive mask. Otar resists fire, frost and shock at the same time. Dragons, mages and atronachs hit with those elements, so Otar helps in the hardest fights. Hevnoraak helps more on the road between fights.
Rahgot adds a large pool of Stamina for a warrior who power attacks. Konahrik saves the wearer at low health. Both of those masks change how a fight goes. Hevnoraak instead removes a slow drain that builds up across many fights.
Among ordinary gear, an enchanted helmet or ring of Resist Disease or Resist Poison can do part of the job. Hevnoraak gives full immunity to both at once, in a single piece.
Quest Background
Valthume is a Nordic ruin southeast of Markarth, at the end of a path from Dushnikh Yal. The Greybeards can point toward it, because its word wall teaches part of the Aura Whisper shout. A ghost named Valdar waits just inside the door. He warns that evil stirs in the tomb.
Valdar explains his duty. Hevnoraak has been dead for many generations, yet his return may be close. Valdar stayed behind to hold the dragon priest in his tomb, and his strength is fading. He asks a champion to find three vessels hidden in the ruin. Their combined power can defeat Hevnoraak.
The ruin is large and winding. Draugr guard each vessel, along with traps and pressure plates. The quest is named Evil in Waiting, and its suggested level is around 24. With the vessels gathered, Hevnoraak bursts from his sarcophagus. He shouts that Valdar will not hold him any longer.
Hevnoraak is a level 50 lightning caster. He throws Chain Lightning and Thunderbolt and can summon a Storm Atronach. He also carries a unique staff that raises a wall of lightning. After the fight, Valdar thanks the hero and offers the mask as a reward.
Lore
Hevnoraak was a cruel dragon priest who practiced mind control. Valdar says he enthralled good men and turned them evil. Fear kept his followers in line, and he could torture them without revolt. Even in death they serve him as draugr in Valthume.
Hevnoraak planned his return obsessively before he died. Valdar says he drained his own blood to transfer his power back into himself after death. The torture devices scattered through Valthume show the cruelty of his rule. The name comes from the dragon word "Hevno", which means "Brutal".
Bugs
Hevnoraak has a faulty hitbox when he climbs out of his coffin. Arrows aimed at part of his body can pass straight through him. Area spells, shouts and melee attacks hit him normally.
Placing Hevnoraak on its bust at Bromjunaar Sanctuary removes any tempering. Temper the mask only after Konahrik is claimed.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Iron Ingot. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Place it on its bust at the shrine in Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven masks of Skyrim, to reveal Konahrik.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Hevnoraak is improved at a workbench with one Iron Ingot per improvement. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
