How It Plays
Otar is the malachite dragon priest mask, and it is the elemental shield of the set. It resists fire, frost and shock at the same time. Those three elements cover most of the dangerous magic in Skyrim. Dragons breathe fire or frost. Mages throw all three. Atronachs are made of them.
The resistance is moderate on each element. It takes a steady share off every elemental hit, and that share adds up in a long fight. Dragon breath, which can melt a character in seconds, becomes far easier to survive.
Otar is heavy armor with the standard heavy rating of the priest masks. A warrior loses nothing in armor by wearing it instead of a normal heavy helmet. The mask adds magic defense on top of physical defense, which few helmets do.
The mask works well from the middle of the game to the end. Ragnvald is a mid level ruin, and its dragon priest is a hard fight for a young character. Once won, Otar stays useful against every dragon and mage that follows.
Perks and Builds
The resistance from Otar stacks with other resistances. A Nord already resists frost, and a Dark Elf already resists fire. Rings and necklaces of Resist Fire, Resist Frost and Resist Shock add more. Together with Otar, a few such pieces push elemental damage very low.
Other skill trees serve the same goal. The Alteration perk Magic Resistance cuts all spell damage further. Wards from Restoration block spells completely for a moment. A warrior with Otar and a good ward can stand in front of a dragon and trade blows.
The Heavy Armor Skill tree carries the armor side. Juggernaut raises the rating, and Well Fitted adds a set bonus when head, chest, hands and feet are heavy armor. Otar fills the head slot for that bonus.
Compared with Other Masks
Ahzidal, Dukaan and Zahkriisos come with the Dragonborn DLC. Each resists one element more strongly than Otar does, and also strengthens spells of that element. A mage who uses one element may prefer one of them. A warrior who faces every element keeps Otar.
Hevnoraak is the other defensive mask. It makes the wearer immune to disease and poison. Otar protects in the big fights, while Hevnoraak protects on the long road between them. Konahrik protects at low health and has the highest base rating of the base game masks.
The Spellbreaker shield and the Shield of Solitude are other anti magic pieces. They take the shield hand, while Otar takes only the head. A warrior can wear Otar with either of them.
Quest Background
Ragnvald is an old ruin in a valley north of Markarth. The guards of Markarth warn travelers that an evil lies to the north, and its name is Ragnvald. An unmarked path leads to it from the north side of Salvius Farm.
The heart of the ruin is a sealed sarcophagus with two empty slots. Its inscription starts the quest. Two draugr guardians each hold a skull key. Guardian Torsten waits in the canal, and Guardian Saerek waits in the crypts. Both must fall, and both keys must be taken.
The two keys go into the slots on the sarcophagus. The lid opens, and Otar the Mad climbs out. He is a level 50 lightning caster. He throws Chain Lightning and Thunderbolt, wears a Lightning Cloak and summons a Storm Atronach. He carries the Staff of the Storm Wall.
The word wall behind the sarcophagus teaches part of Kyne's Peace. A boss chest nearby holds more treasure. The skull keys can be taken back from the coffin and sold.
Lore
The legend of Ragnvald tells of a Nord chieftain named Otar. Evil voices in his head drove him mad. He became a servant of the ancient dragons and brought dark times on his people.
Two Nord champions, Torsten and Saerek, could not destroy him. They sealed him inside the ruin instead. Each of them kept one key, so that no single hand could set him free. Their draugr still guard those keys.
Otar's mask is one of the eight placed on the shrine at Bromjunaar Sanctuary. With all eight in place, the shrine reveals Konahrik.
Bugs
Placing Otar on its bust at the shrine removes any tempering. Temper the mask only after Konahrik is claimed.
Dragon priest masks share their equipment slot with circlets. A few helmets that should block a mask, such as the Jagged Crown, can be worn together with one.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Refined Malachite. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Place it on its bust at the shrine in Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven masks of Skyrim, to reveal Konahrik.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Otar is improved at a workbench with one Refined Malachite per improvement. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
