How It Plays
Vokun is the steel dragon priest mask, and it serves the quieter schools of magic. It makes Conjuration, Illusion and Alteration spells cheaper. Those three schools summon allies, bend minds and shield the body.
A conjurer gains the most in combat. Summoning a Flame Atronach, a Dremora Lord or a Dead Thrall costs a large lump of Magicka. Vokun trims every summon. The conjurer can then recast a fallen ally sooner or keep a spare spell ready.
An illusionist gains in a similar way. Calm, Fear and Frenzy spells are expensive at higher levels. Invisibility and Muffle cost a great deal for a short effect. Vokun lowers each cast, so a sneaky mage can stay hidden for longer.
Alteration is the third school on the mask. Oakflesh, Stoneflesh, Ironflesh and Ebonyflesh all cost less. Utility spells such as Telekinesis, Detect Life and Waterbreathing get cheaper too. A mage who keeps an armor spell running all day spends less Magicka on it.
Vokun is heavy armor with the standard heavy rating of the priest masks. That is unusual for a mage mask. A spellsword in heavy armor gets real protection and cheaper spells at once.
Perks and Builds
The cost cut from the mask stacks with the cost perks of each school. Novice through Master Conjuration each halve the cost of spells of their level. Illusion and Alteration have the same five perks. With Vokun and those perks, many everyday spells cost almost nothing.
A conjurer in heavy armor is a classic build. The Heavy Armor Skill tree adds protection, while the summons do the fighting. The Conjuration perk Twin Souls lets two summons fight at once. Vokun makes keeping both of them alive cheaper.
Mage Armor in the Alteration Skill tree is the main conflict. The perk works only with no armor at all, and Vokun is heavy armor. A pure mage who leans on Ebonyflesh with Mage Armor should weigh that loss.
Archmage's Robes pair well with the mask. The robes can be worn together with any dragon priest mask. They lower the cost of every school and add Magicka. With both, a conjurer or illusionist casts very cheaply.
Compared with Other Masks
Nahkriin covers the other two schools, Destruction and Restoration. A mage who throws fire and heals picks Nahkriin. A mage who summons and charms picks Vokun. Some mages carry both and swap by the task at hand.
Morokei doubles Magicka regeneration instead of cutting costs. It suits a caster who uses many school types. It is also light armor with a very low rating. Vokun gives far more protection.
The Necromancer Amulet also cuts Conjuration costs, and it frees the head slot for another helmet. A conjurer can wear both pieces and stack the savings.
Quest Background
High Gate Ruins is a remote Nordic ruin on the snowy tundra east of Solitude, near the Sea of Ghosts. A Nord wizard named Anska waits inside. She has found Vokun's crypt. She seeks a scroll that could link her family to the legendary Ysgramor. She describes Vokun as some old priest buried there long ago.
Anska asks for an escort through the ruin. She fights with her own spells but needs a guard at the front. The path holds draugr, a spike wall and a lever puzzle with four animal symbols. A second puzzle room hides two boss draugr behind sliding walls. The quest is called A Scroll for Anska.
Vokun bursts from his sarcophagus as soon as the throne room door opens. He is a lightning priest, yet he relies on a Staff of Fireballs from range. He also summons a Storm Atronach and wears a Lightning Cloak. On defeat, he drops the mask and his staff.
The word wall beyond his throne teaches part of Storm Call. The sealed scroll lies on a table nearby. Anska rewards the hero with a unique spell tome for Flaming Familiar. She then stays behind to study the scroll.
Lore
The name Vokun means "Shadow" in the dragon language. Vokun was one of the eight high ranking dragon priests of Skyrim. His mask is one of the eight placed on the shrine at Bromjunaar Sanctuary to reveal Konahrik.
A loading screen of the game says the highest ranking Dragon Priests were granted magical masks that defy the laws of time. Vokun's mask, made of steel, is among the plainest in metal but one of the most useful to a mage.
Bugs
Placing Vokun on its bust at the shrine removes any tempering. Temper the mask only after Konahrik is claimed.
Dragon priest masks share their equipment slot with circlets. A few helmets that should block a mask, such as the Jagged Crown, can be worn together with one.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Steel Ingot. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Place it on its bust at the shrine in Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven masks of Skyrim, to reveal Konahrik.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Vokun is improved at a workbench with one Steel Ingot per improvement. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
