How It Plays
Krosis is the thief's dragon priest mask. It improves three skills that rarely meet on one helmet: Lockpicking, Archery and Alchemy. A character who picks locks, shoots from the shadows and brews poisons uses all three every day. The mask turns each of those habits into a small edge.
The Archery bonus is the part felt in combat. Every arrow from a bow hits harder while the mask is worn. A sneak archer who opens each fight with a hidden shot gains the most. The bonus also helps a hunter who shoots dragons from range.
The Lockpicking bonus makes locks more forgiving. The sweet spot on the lock grows wider, so fewer picks break. Expert and master locks become far less of a chore. The bonus helps most early in the game, before the Lockpicking perks are taken.
The Alchemy bonus raises the strength of every potion and poison made while the mask is on. Put it on before mixing at an alchemy lab. Stronger poisons on arrows add yet more damage to an archer's opening shot. A character can wear another helmet in the field and swap to Krosis only to brew.
Krosis is light armor with a solid rating for its class. It shares the highest base rating among light helmets with Volsung. A thief in light armor does not lose much protection by choosing it.
Perks and Builds
The Archery Skill tree builds on the mask. Overdraw raises bow damage further, and Steady Hand slows time while aiming. Quick Shot speeds up the draw for a fast archer. The Sneak perk Deadly Aim then triples the damage of a hidden arrow.
The Alchemy Skill tree pairs with the potion bonus. Alchemist raises potion strength, and Poisoner makes poisons stronger. Concentrated Poison lets one dose last for several hits.
The Lockpicking Skill tree has its own help. Novice Locks through Master Locks each make one level of lock easier. With Krosis on, many of these perks can wait while points go to combat skills.
The Light Armor Skill tree adds the armor. Agile Defender raises the rating of light pieces, and Custom Fit adds a bonus when a full light set is worn. Krosis fills the head slot for that set bonus.
Compared with Other Masks
Volsung is the other light armor mask with the same top rating. Volsung improves prices, carrying capacity and water breathing. It suits a trader or explorer, while Krosis suits a fighter who sneaks.
Most other masks serve mages or heavy armor warriors. Morokei, Nahkriin and Vokun help spellcasters. Otar, Hevnoraak and Rahgot are heavy armor pieces. Krosis stands apart as the only mask for an archer.
The Nightingale Hood and the Thieves Guild Hood are the main rivals for a thief's head. The Nightingale Hood cuts the cost of Illusion spells. The Guild Master's Hood improves prices. Krosis is the strongest of these for a bow user.
Shearpoint
Krosis lies at Shearpoint, a dragon lair on a mountain top. Unlike most dragon priests, he rests in the open air. His sarcophagus stands in front of the word wall, which teaches all three words of Throw Voice. A leveled dragon usually guards the peak as well.
The fight is a duel on a narrow summit. Krosis is a level 50 caster. He is a frost priest, yet he leans on his Staff of Fireballs for most of his damage. He floats and strafes around the peak at speed and dodges slow arrows and spells. Area spells and shouts catch him more easily than single bolts.
The cliff edge is a danger on both sides. Krosis can drift off the edge of the summit, and his body can land among the rocks below. A warrior who chases him can fall to death in the same way. Fight with the cliff behind Krosis, not behind the fighter.
Lore
The name Krosis means "Sorrow" in the dragon language. The word also works like an apology. Paarthurnax uses it this way when asked about Dragonrend. He says he does not know the Thu'um that is sought, and adds "Krosis" to express his regret.
Krosis is one of the eight high ranking dragon priests who once served the dragons. His mask is one of the eight placed on the shrine at Bromjunaar Sanctuary to reveal Konahrik.
Bugs
Krosis sometimes stays passive and does not attack, even when struck first. He can then be killed without a fight.
Placing Krosis on its bust at the shrine removes any tempering.
Dragon priest masks share their equipment slot with circlets. A few helmets that should block a mask, such as the Jagged Crown, can be worn together with one.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Iron Ingot. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Place it on its bust at the shrine in Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven masks of Skyrim, to reveal Konahrik.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Krosis is improved at a workbench with one Iron Ingot per improvement. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
