Morokei is the moonstone dragon priest mask, the favorite headpiece of many pure mages. It doubles the speed of Magicka regeneration and keeps a caster ready for the next spell. It is taken from the dragon priest Morokei at the end of Labyrinthian in Hjaalmarch, during the College of Winterhold quest The Staff of Magnus, a mid game quest.
The name Morokei means "Glorious" in the dragon language. The mask counts as light armor and is very thin. Its armor rating is the second lowest of all the masks, above only the Wooden Mask. A warrior gains little from it, while a mage gains a great deal.

How It Plays
Magicka regeneration decides how long a mage can keep fighting. Without help, a caster who empties the Magicka bar must stop, run or reach for a potion. Morokei cuts that waiting time in half. A Destruction mage can throw spells more often, and a healer can keep a Healing spell running longer.
The mask helps most with concentration spells. Flames, Sparks and Frostbite drain Magicka every second they run. Healing Hands and the wards drain it the same way. Faster regeneration lets these spells run longer between pauses.
Regeneration also matters between fights. A mage with the mask enters the next room with a full bar sooner. That saves potions for the hard fights, such as dragons and dragon priests.
The thin armor is the price. A mage who wears Morokei should keep enemies at range or behind a ward.
Perks and Builds
The Restoration perk Recovery raises Magicka regeneration by itself. Its bonus adds to the mask, so the two together refill the bar very fast. The Atronach Stone lowers regeneration in return for spell absorption, and Morokei softens that drawback. The Apprentice Stone does the opposite, and stacks with the mask for even faster regeneration.
A High Elf gains a little more. The Highborn racial power boosts Magicka regeneration for a short time, and its bonus adds to the mask. Together they suit a High Elf mage who fights with Destruction from long range.
Archmage's Robes are a natural partner. The robes cut the cost of every school of magic and also speed up Magicka regeneration. They are hooded robes, yet the dragon priest masks can be worn with them. A mage in Archmage's Robes and Morokei gets cheaper spells and very fast regeneration at once.
Mage Armor in the Alteration Skill tree only works with no armor at all. Morokei is light armor, so it switches that perk off. A caster who leans on Oakflesh, Stoneflesh or Ebonyflesh with Mage Armor should weigh that loss.
Compared with Other Masks
Nahkriin is the other great mage mask. It adds a flat 50 Magicka and makes Destruction and Restoration spells cheaper. Nahkriin is the better pick for a caster who spends Magicka in short bursts. Morokei is better for long fights with concentration spells and for a mage who casts all day.
Vokun lowers the cost of Conjuration, Illusion and Alteration spells. A conjurer or an illusionist often prefers Vokun, since those schools spend their Magicka in big single casts. Miraak, from the Dragonborn DLC, adds a large pool of Magicka and has far more armor.
The Mage's Circlet and the Diadem of the Savant are the other mage choices for the head. The circlet adds Magicka, and the diadem lowers the cost of spells in every school.
Quest Background
The Staff of Magnus starts at the College of Winterhold. Mirabelle Ervine sends the Dragonborn to Labyrinthian to find the Staff of Magnus. The staff is the only tool that can stop the Eye of Magnus beneath the College.
Labyrinthian holds an old secret of the Arch-Mage. Ghostly images show that Savos Aren came here as a young man with five fellow students. They found Morokei and could not defeat him. Savos bound his last two living friends as thralls to keep the dragon priest sealed. Their spell has held ever since.
Morokei speaks throughout the dungeon. He first calls out in the dragon language. He then switches to the common tongue, calls it guttural and asks whether Aren has returned. His voice comes with a blue wind that drains Magicka. At the end of the ruin, the two enthralled wizards hold him in a barrier of light.
The fight is hard for an early character. Morokei is a level 50 caster. He throws Chain Lightning and Thunderbolt, wears a Lightning Cloak and summons a Storm Atronach. He can also seize control of a summoned daedra with Command Daedra. The two thralls fight too, and they must fall before Morokei is free. Defeating him yields both the mask and the Staff of Magnus.
Lore
Morokei is one of the eight high ranking dragon priests of Skyrim. He guarded the Staff of Magnus deep inside Bromjunaar, the old capital of the Dragon Cult. His opening words in the dragon tongue ask who comes to his dark kingdom.
A loading screen of the game says the highest ranking Dragon Priests were granted magical masks that defy the laws of time. Morokei's mask is placed on its bust at Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven, to reveal Konahrik.
Bugs
The mask was meant to carry a second effect. Its unique enchantment should also shorten the cooldown of shouts by 20%. In the game, the mask carries only the plain regeneration effect, which is the same as a common Recovery enchantment.
Placing Morokei on its bust at the shrine removes any tempering. Temper the mask only after Konahrik is claimed.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Refined Moonstone. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Place it on its bust at the shrine in Bromjunaar Sanctuary, together with the other seven masks of Skyrim, to reveal Konahrik.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Morokei is improved at a workbench with one Refined Moonstone per improvement. The Daedric Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
