How It Plays
Blackguard's Armor is a thief's cuirass hidden away on Solstheim. Its enchantment raises carrying capacity by 50 points, so a thief can haul far more loot before becoming overencumbered. The bonus equals that of the Guild Master's Armor, which offers five more points of armor.
The Guild Master's Armor waits at the very end of the Thieves Guild questline. Blackguard's Armor needs only membership in the guild and one quest on Solstheim. A thief can therefore wear the stronger enchantment much earlier, as an upgrade over the plain Thieves Guild Armor.
The cuirass is tempered at a workbench with a piece of Leather. As an enchanted item, it needs the Arcane Blacksmith perk for tempering.
The Full Set
The Blackguard's set has four pieces, all light armor. The cuirass adds carrying capacity. Blackguard's Boots make pickpocketing 40 percent better, Blackguard's Gloves make lockpicking 40 percent easier, and Blackguard's Hood makes prices 25 percent better. The boots, gloves and hood each beat their Guild Master's counterparts by five points, and the cuirass ties.
Together the four pieces make the strongest outfit for the thief's trade: stealing from pockets, opening locks, selling the loot and carrying it home.
Perks and Builds
The Light Armor skill tree covers the set. Agile Defender raises the armor rating of light armor by up to 100 percent. Wearing all four pieces meets the Custom Fit condition of light armor on head, chest, hands and feet. Unhindered makes worn light armor weigh nothing, which pairs well with the cuirass's carry bonus.
Quest Background
The Blackguard's set waits in the basement of Glover Mallory's House in Raven Rock on Solstheim. Glover is the town blacksmith and the brother of Delvin Mallory of the Thieves Guild. A shadowmark beside his front door gives away his ties to the guild. The set is open only to guild members, since Glover's quest Paid in Full follows the Thieves Guild quest Meet the Family.
Asked about the shadowmark, Glover asks after his brother and then admits a problem of his own making. A fellow Breton named Esmond Tyne noticed the shadowmarks and turned up at his door. Glover took him for a guild member, and Esmond stole his formula for improved bonemold, years of work. Esmond talked of fencing goods to the rieklings at Castle Karstaag before he ran off.
Esmond lies dead in the Castle Karstaag Caverns with the formula on his body. Glover shows no grief at the news and hands over the key to his house and basement. Everything inside is free to take: coin purses, potions, poisons, enchanted gear and the full Blackguard's set in its display case.
The basement also holds Glover's Letter. It reveals that Glover is the real father of Sapphire, a member of the Thieves Guild in Riften. Taking the letter to Sapphire gives her the truth about her father.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Leather. The Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed because of the enchantment.
- Its carry bonus of 50 matches the Guild Master's Armor, which gives 38 armor against 33.
