How It Plays
The Guild Master's Armor is the darker, finer version of the Thieves Guild cuirass. It carries the same idea as the members' armor: a big boost to carrying capacity. A thief who empties a whole house needs room for the loot. The cuirass gives that room and protects the body at the same time.
The carry bonus is the main reason to wear it. More capacity means fewer trips to a fence and fewer heavy items left behind. A dungeon full of ingots, gems and enchanted weapons can be cleared in one run. The bonus also matters for a warrior who carries heavy armor and weapons in the pack.
The armor rating is good for light armor. It is better than the regular Thieves Guild Armor, though the Guild Master's version weighs a little more. It stays a sound choice for a light armor thief well into the late game.
The cuirass belongs to a set of four. With the boots, gloves and hood, the outfit improves pickpocketing, lockpicking and prices as well. A Guild Master in full regalia carries every trade of the thief at once.
Perks and Builds
The Light Armor Skill tree builds on the cuirass. Agile Defender raises its rating. Custom Fit adds a bonus when the head, chest, hands and feet are all light armor. Matching Set adds a further bonus when all four pieces are of one set, which the Guild Master's outfit forms. Unhindered removes the weight of light armor from the burden of carrying it.
The carry bonus stacks with other sources. The Steed Stone adds more capacity. Rings and necklaces of Fortify Carry Weight stack too. A hoarder who combines them can carry almost anything.
Tempering ignores every smithing perk. The armor stops at Flawless with a Smithing skill of 100. Fortify Smithing gear and potions push it higher.
Compared with Other Cuirasses
The regular Thieves Guild Armor adds less carrying capacity, even in its improved form. The Guild Master's Armor replaces it as the best guild cuirass.
Blackguard's Armor from the Dragonborn DLC gives the same carry bonus. It is a little lighter on protection. A thief who has both can choose by look or by rating.
The Nightingale Armor offers Stamina and frost resistance instead. A thief who fights often may prefer the Nightingale cuirass. A thief who hauls loot prefers the Guild Master's Armor.
Quest Background
The armor is the reward for Under New Management, the final quest of the Thieves Guild. The guild must first be restored to its old strength. Delvin Mallory and Vex hand out small jobs in Solitude, Markarth, Whiterun and Windhelm. Five jobs in one hold open a special reputation job there.
Each reputation job is a small story of its own. Imitation Amnesty takes place in Whiterun and Silver Lining in Markarth. Summerset Shadows is set in Windhelm, and The Dainty Sload in Solitude. Each one adds a merchant to the Ragged Flagon and brings the guild more influence.
With all four done and Darkness Returns complete, Brynjolf calls the guild together. A crowd gathers in the Cistern, with Karliah and Maven Black-Briar among them. Brynjolf confirms the choice with Delvin, Vex and Karliah. The Dragonborn is named Guild Master.
Brynjolf then hands over the Tribute Chest Key and the Amulet of Articulation. He sends the new Guild Master to Tonilia for the Guild Master's Armor. The set looks much like the armor that Mercer Frey wore as Guild Master.
Lore
The Thieves Guild of Skyrim works from the Ragged Flagon, deep in the Ratway beneath Riften. Its luck had failed for years after Mercer Frey stole the Skeleton Key of Nocturnal. Restoring the key, and then the guild's reach across Skyrim, ends that long decline.
Gameplay Tips
- Temper it at a workbench with one Leather. The Arcane Blacksmith perk is needed.
- Its carry bonus of 50 beats the 20, or 35 when improved, of the regular Thieves Guild Armor.
- Blackguard's Armor gives the same carry bonus with 33 armor.
Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Guild Master's Armor is improved at a workbench with one Leather per improvement. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
