Dezerter is a double-barrel shotgun that fires explosive rounds and smashes everything in its path. It is the stash weapon of Leon Rinder, a former BARGHEST soldier who trades it for his life. Every kill sets V on fire for a short time, unless V's Health is already low. The flames hurt, but they also give a burst of movement speed and Mitigation Chance. Dezerter is a brutal close-range gun for a Body build that rushes from one kill to the next. Dezerter is a Phantom Liberty reward from the job Addicted To Chaos. That job follows the gig The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman in Dogtown.
Combat
Dezerter fires a heavy blast of explosive pellets. Its strong armor penetration lets it shred enemies and their armour alike. Its short range keeps it a close-range gun.
The Iconic effect rewards every kill. A kill while V's Health is above the low mark sets V on fire. The burn deals steady damage to V. It also raises movement speed and Mitigation Chance while it lasts. V can then rush the next enemy faster and take less damage on the way. At low Health the burn stays off, so it cannot kill V.
How to Get Dezerter Guide
- Take the gig The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman and meet Briana Dolson in Longshore Stacks.
- Follow the clues to the scavenger hideout in the old motel.
- Find Leon Rinder and spare him to take his deal.
- Go to Rinder's garage near Terra Cognita and enter the door code 1975.
- Take Dezerter from the cache in the garage.
Dezerter Map Location and Quest Guide
- Take the gig The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman and meet Briana Dolson at the evening vigil.
- Talk to Briana, follow her and take Jason's shard.
- Go to the old motel and get past the Scavengers inside.
- Search the upper floors for Rinder and defeat Yasha Ivanov when he ambushes V.
- Confront the bedridden Rinder, spare him and accept his deal. Killing him loses Dezerter.
- Take Rinder's dog tag and bring it to Briana.
- Go to Rinder's garage near Terra Cognita and open it with the code he sends.
- Take Dezerter from the cache in the garage.

Character Builds
Dezerter works best with the shotgun perks in the Body tree. Like A Feather removes the shotgun movement penalty, which works well with the burn's speed bonus. With Rip And Tear, a shotgun blast doubles the damage of the next Quick Melee Attack, and the reverse is also true. Rush Of Blood speeds up the reload after a dismemberment. Close-Quarters Carnage adds a chance to obliterate enemies at close range.
Healing helps against the self-burn. The Blood Pump restores a large amount of Health when used. Spring Joints raise Mitigation Strength, which works with the burn's Mitigation Chance bonus. Shock Absorber reduces recoil.

Lore
Dezerter is the Iconic variant of the Rostović DB-2 Testera. Its story starts with a Dogtown gig. Briana Dolson hires V to find the man who gunned down Jason Foreman in Longshore Stacks. The trail leads to a scavenger hideout in an old motel. There V finds the killer, Leon Rinder, bedridden and weak. V can kill him, walk away, or spare him and take a deal. If V spares him, Rinder sends the coordinates and the door code of his private garage near Terra Cognita. The shotgun waits in a cache inside. The job's journal entry wonders whether a deal with a homicidal psychopath was worth it.
