Night's Cavalry is a field boss in Elden Ring.

The Night's Cavalry are black-armored knights who ride the roads of the Lands Between after dark. Each one appears only at night and patrols its own stretch of road, from Limgrave to the Consecrated Snowfield. They fight with a flail or a glaive from the back of a funeral steed. Every rider guards an Ash of War, and the last pair guards their full armor set.

Lore

The rider is a knight in black armor with long black hair streaming from the helm. It sits on a dark funeral steed and swings a spiked flail or a long glaive.

The Night's Cavalry were once led by the Fell Omen. They delivered death to great warriors, knights and champions, and now they wander the dim roads of night.

Their fond memory of the Fell Omen lives on in the Phantom Slash, which calls up an apparition of their former teacher.

Attacks

  • Side Swing: the weapon sweeps one side of the horse; roll away from the mount or toward its left flank.
  • Leap Attack: horse and rider leap a long way and swing to the right; roll toward or away from it depending on the plan.
  • Rearing Swing: the horse rears as the rider swings; roll underneath to reach the weaker left flank.
  • Weapon Slam: a straight slam in front of the horse; move to the hindquarters and strike.
  • Grinding or Twirling Strafe: the glaive drags in sparks or the flail whirls overhead as it rides past; roll away and wait for the follow up.
  • Horse Bash: the steed shoves itself hard to the right; avoid the right flank.
  • Remount: once unhorsed, the rider stomps out dark energy and calls the horse back; roll away from the burst.

Tactics

  1. Wait for night, or rest at a Site of Grace until nightfall, to make the rider appear.
  2. Fight on foot, where rolling and positioning beat the rider's speed on horseback.
  3. Stay by the horse's left flank and hindquarters, where few attacks reach.
  4. Bait a charge from medium range, roll in the direction it moves and land one or two hits.
  5. Kill the horse to knock the rider down for a critical hit.
  6. Stay close once the rider is on foot, since it remounts sooner when its foe backs off.
  7. Parry the glaive riders to unhorse them for a critical hit.

Best Builds

Long pierce weapon

Spears and halberds reach the rider over the horse, and the rider takes extra damage from piercing attacks.

Lightning incantations

Lightning Spear chips the rider down from range with its best damage type.

  • Each rider drops its own Ash of War; the Weeping Peninsula rider also drops the Nightrider Flail and the Bellum Highway rider the Nightrider Glaive.
  • The Consecrated Snowfield pair gives 84,000 runes, an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and the Night's Cavalry Set; both must fall on the same night.
  • The horse and rider have separate health bars, and only the rider must die to end the fight.
  • The Dragonbarrow rider gives 42,000 runes and the Forbidden Lands rider gives 36,000.
