The Rara Avis raises V's total Armor by a large percentage. The more Armor V already wears, the more it adds. It is the Iconic variant of Para Bellum, with a much bigger bonus and a much bigger capacity cost. It suits a heavily chromed tank that already stacks Armor from other implants and wants to multiply it. Its Body attunement also adds a solid chunk of Health. The Rara Avis is a mid to late game Phantom Liberty implant, sold by the ripperdocs in Dogtown from level 20 and found in Dogtown airdrops.
Effect
The Rara Avis is a passive implant. It raises V's Armor by a percentage of the Armor V already has. At Tier 3 the bonus is close to a third. At Tier 5++ it passes forty percent. Since it works as a percentage, the bonus grows with every other source of Armor. A character with little Armor gains little. A character with high Armor gains a great deal.
Armor lowers the damage V takes from attacks. A larger total therefore makes every hit hurt less.
The implant is attuned to Body. Each Body point adds two points of Health. A character with full Body gains forty extra Health. That bonus works no matter how much Armor V has.

Upgrades
The Rara Avis comes in Tiers 3 to 5, with plus steps in between. Each step raises the Armor bonus. The capacity cost stays the same at every tier, and it is much heavier than the cost of Para Bellum. Cyberware Capacity Shards, the Edgerunner perk and All Things Cyber help make room for it. Ripperdocs in Dogtown stock Tier 3 from level 20, Tier 4 from level 30 and Tier 5 from level 40. A ripperdoc can upgrade it with crafting components up to Tier 5++.
The table shows what each tier step of Rara Avis costs at a ripperdoc.
| Upgrade | Components | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 4 to Tier 4+ | 70 Tier 4 components | - |
| Tier 4+ to Tier 5 | 52 Tier 5 components | - |
| Tier 5 to Tier 5+ | 70 Tier 5 components | - |
| Tier 5+ to Tier 5++ | 175 Tier 5 components | Phantom Liberty |
Character Builds
The Rara Avis belongs in a Body build that also invests in Technical Ability. All Things Cyber cuts the capacity cost of Integumentary System and Skeleton cyberware, which helps with this heavy implant. License To Chrome adds Armor, unlocks a third Skeleton slot and boosts all Skeleton cyberware. Chrome Constitution lowers incoming damage when every Integumentary System and Skeleton slot is filled.
Other implants raise the base Armor that the Rara Avis multiplies. Bionic Joints add a flat amount of Armor in the Skeleton. Many Integumentary System and Legs implants also add Armor, such as the Peripheral Inverse and the Leeroy Ligament System.
Select a Build
The build deals huge damage at close range with shotguns and obliterates enemies outright. Health regen and Adrenaline Rush keep the character alive. Borzaya handles anything further away.

Most swings of Sasquatch's Hammer either kill an enemy outright or knock it flat. Quake slams a whole group to the ground, and Militech Berserk makes the character invulnerable when things get dangerous. An SMG covers the moments that need speed or reach.

Lore
The Rara Avis is the Iconic variant of Para Bellum. Its in-game line borrows an old saying: those who want peace should prepare for war. The base implant takes its name from the same saying. The Rara Avis builds on that idea with a far stronger effect. It is one of the Iconic implants that arrived with Phantom Liberty and are sold only inside Dogtown.
Notes
- Para Bellum is the base implant. It costs less capacity and adds a much smaller Armor percentage.
