The D5 Sidewinder is Nokota's smart assault rifle, the guided cousin of the common D5 Copperhead. With a Smart Link installed, its rounds lock on and curve toward enemies. V can spray at a group and let the bullets find their targets. Its built-in trait goes even further. Each round hits harder, but some rounds lose their lock and miss. The Sidewinder is an easy automatic rifle for an Intelligence build from the first hours of the game. Divided We Stand is its Iconic variant. The D5 Sidewinder turns up from the early game onward. Weapon shops in Watson, Westbrook, Heywood and Santo Domingo sell it, and enemies carry it.
Combat
The Sidewinder fires in full auto. With a Smart Link in V's hands, it locks onto enemies inside its tracking box, and its rounds steer toward them. Smart bullets can bend around cover, but they fly slower than normal rounds. Smart weapons also deal a little less raw damage in return for easier aiming.
The rifle's trait changes this balance again. Every round deals extra damage, but each one has a chance to lose its lock and miss. Over a long burst the misses even out, so the Sidewinder rewards holding the trigger on one target. Short taps at a single enemy make the misses much more noticeable.
The rifle works best at mid range against groups standing in the open. Smart rounds only chase targets inside the tracking box. An enemy who sprints out of it breaks the lock. Fast enemies are the rifle's weak spot.

Character Builds
The Sidewinder uses perks from two attribute trees, Intelligence and Reflexes. In Intelligence, No Escape resets a target lock that is about to run out when V shoots that enemy. Targeting Prism allows several locks while aiming and adds one more target for every smart weapon. Terminal Velocity speeds up the rounds and extends lock-on range for a short time after each smart kill. It helps with the slow bullets. Recirculation returns RAM after a smart kill, and more if the target was hacked.
In Reflexes, Spice Of Life briefly reduces the spread after a weapon swap. Gundancer lets V move at full speed while aiming and shoot while vaulting. Spray And Pray cuts the Stamina cost of hip-fire, which helps a gun that does its own aiming.
Smart Link is the one piece of cyberware the rifle really needs, because it turns on the smart targeting. Its mod slots take smart and rifle mods. Panorama widens the smart targeting circle. It also holds a lock briefly after an enemy leaves the circle. Better Half adds crit chance for the second half of the magazine. Equalizer adds damage against Elite enemies. Ready Steady cuts recoil. Hackatomy, an Iconic mod, gives each hit a chance to apply a quickhack effect that depends on the body part hit. Pax makes the rifle non-lethal.
Select a Build
Each fight starts with Overclock, then a control quickhack, then a combat quickhack. Smart guns lock on and finish the hacked enemies while Dashes and air Dashes keep the character moving. Silenced Smart guns and stealthy quickhacks also handle quiet gigs.

Lore
The rifle's in-game line is a sales pitch: smart rifle, smart choice. The same line admits the downside, that missed shots do happen once in a while. Nokota makes both D5 rifles. The Copperhead is the plain Power model, and the Sidewinder is the same rifle with smart targeting.
Its Iconic variant, Divided We Stand, is a prize from a rooftop shooting party in Rancho Coronado. It locks onto even more enemies and spreads its fire across a whole group.
Notes
- Divided We Stand is the Iconic variant of the D5 Sidewinder.
- The D5 Copperhead is Nokota's Power rifle with the same D5 name.
